JOHN W. STEVENSON, JR.

John is a native Texan. He was born in Fort Worth in 1957 and later moved to Nacogdoches. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. At Trinity, John was president of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and a member of Alpha Chi and Triniteers Fraternities. He earned his J.D. Degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1982, where he won championships in Moot Court and Mock Trial competitions and was selected to the prestigious Order of the Barristers.

After graduation, John joined Ross, Griggs & Harrison, a 20-person insurance defense firm in Houston. He held the distinction of being the only first year lawyer solely responsible for his own docket. In less than a year, John had actively participated in numerous cases, many involving multiple wrongful deaths and multi-million dollar damage claims. As an associate attorney, John gained extensive trial experience, trying more cases than any other attorney at the firm while there.

In 1987, John founded his own firm to champion the rights of injured individuals. The same year he was awarded the highest rating of "AV" by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. Since then, John has remained focused on plaintiffs' personal injury litigation, working tirelessly to obtain the best possible outcome for his clients. In his distinguished career, John has handled many notable cases, with impressive results.

John is a member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates. John is admitted to the State Bar of Texas and to practice before the U.S. District Court in the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. John and his wife, Robyn, have three children.

John’s dedication to helping those in need reaches beyond his practice of law. John and his firm are generous contributors to many community organizations. His generosity and support have been acknowledged both publicly and privately.

JOHN C. SCHWAMBACH, JR.

John was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1962. He graduated in 1984 from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. John earned his J.D. Degree from The University of Texas School of Law in 1991, where he served as a Teaching Quizmaster for two years.

John practiced personal injury law with the late Malcom McGregor in El Paso, Texas for approximately five years. In 1998, he moved to Houston to join John Stevenson in his practice.

Widely recognized for his appellate expertise, John has handled many appeals and original proceedings in both state and federal courts, several of which have resulted in published opinions. He has extensive trial court experience responding to and arguing numerous motions, including special appearances, motions to transfer venue, and summary judgments.

A member of the State Bar of Texas, John is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts in the Southern and Western Districts of Texas. In addition, John is admitted to practice before the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. John and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of three children.

MARK T. MURRAY

Born in Colorado, Mark was raised and educated in Texas. He received his B.A. from Baylor University and his J.D. from South Texas College of Law, where his exceptional advocacy skills earned him admission to the esteemed Order of the Barristers.
After graduating law school in 1990, Mark joined the firm of Tucker Hendryx and Gascoyne, litigating cases for those who had been sued. Mark began practicing plaintiff’s personal injury law five years later at the venerable Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Matthews & Friend. In 2005, Mark joined John Stevenson & Associates, where he continues to devote his practice to protecting the legal rights of those injured through the negligent and willful conduct of others. 

Mark’s career is replete with accomplishments and honors that few attorneys achieve. Mark was chosen as a Texas Super Lawyer in 2003 and has been selected every year since then by the Texas Monthly Publication. Mark was also named a Houston Top Lawyer by H Texas Magazine, an honor that places him in the top 5% of all lawyers in the State of Texas. A member of the elite American Board of Trial Advocates, Mark was voted into the organization by his colleagues as one of its youngest members. Additionally, Mark’s peers gave him the highest peer rating of “AV” in the Martindale Hubbell Law Directory. Collectively, these tributes reflect the respect that Mark enjoys throughout the legal community.

Mark is also recognized by the state and national licensing authorities as having reached the highest level of expertise in his field of practice. He is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is also Board Certified in Civil Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.

Driving Mark’s talent and reputation is his personal commitment to victim’s rights. Mark is a past President of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association, whose mission is to protect, promote and safeguard the rights of people forced to seek redress in law. He is also a Fellow in the Texas Bar Foundation, the largest charitably funded bar foundation in the country dedicated to advancing the justice system for all.

A member of the State Bar of Texas and Houston Bar Association, Mark serves on the Fee Dispute Arbitration Panel and Public Speakers Bureau.  In addition, Mark is a member of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Federal and American Bar Associations, the South Texas College of Law Alumni Association (Member, Board of Directors) and the Million Dollar Advocates Forum.

Mark’s dedication extends beyond his own accomplishments to helping others improve their advocacy skills. He is an Adjunct Professor at South Texas College of Law, and a frequent CLE lecturer and contributor.

 

JEREMY R. NEWELL

Jeremy is a native Houstonian. An honors graduate from Texas A&M University, Jeremy earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science in 1995. He earned his J.D. Degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1999. During law school, Jeremy excelled in mock trial and moot court competitions, and was chosen to serve on the Houston Journal of International Law. He also was awarded an internship during law school with U.S. Magistrate Judge Nancy Johnson, which he fulfilled while attending school.

After graduation, Jeremy dedicated his practice entirely to plaintiffs’ litigation. In 2003, Jeremy joined John Sevenson and further refined his practice to plaintiff’s personal injury. With his focus solely in the field of plaintiffs’ rights, Jeremy has become a seasoned and skilled advocate, successfully litigating for numerous injured individuals and their families.

For this reason, Jeremy has been honored by the publishers of Texas Monthly Magazine as a Texas Rising Star – Super Lawyer in 2006. However, Jeremy’s passion is perhaps best reflected in his resolve to try cases. Jeremy excels in trial preparedness and tenacity. Currently, he represents plaintiffs in the areas of admiralty and maritime, products liability, premises liability and general negligence.

CORTLAN H. MADDUX

Born in Oklahoma, Cort attended Baylor University to obtain both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. After receiving a B.A. in History and Political Science in 1993, Cort went on to graduate cum laude from Baylor Law School in 1998, where he was a member of the Law Review and named Outstanding Student of the Law School. From there, Cort had the honor of serving as a briefing attorney for the Honorable Harriet O’Neill and the Honorable Kem Thompson Frost on the Fourteenth Court of Appeals in Houston. This year of appellate experience provided Cort with a significant advantage in trial analysis and strategy as he began his trial practice.

In 1999, Cort accepted employment with Fulbright and Jaworski L.L.P., where he handled a litany of civil litigation matters. Cort’s aptitude and skill was put to work on a docket that varied from mass tort and products liability litigation to energy and real estate litigation. During his tenure at Fulbright, Cort handled numerous lawsuits, including those involving claims of catastrophic personal injuries, defective products and medical devices, injuries caused by hazardous pharmaceuticals and dangerous premises, toxic torts, accidents and injuries at oil and gas facilities and other industrial sites, property loss, conversion, breach of contract, and other commercial disputes.

Cort’s exceptional talent was recognized not only by those with whom and against whom he practiced, but also by Texas Monthly Magazine. In 2004, 2005, and 2006, the magazine recognized Cort as a “Texas Rising Star,” an honor awarded to the top 2.5% of Texas lawyers under age forty.

In 2006, Cort joined John Stevenson & Associates, seeking to use his vast experience to advance plaintiffs’ rights and improve the lives of those injured negligently or intentionally by others. The commitment, ethics, and accomplishments that Cort brings with him match the dedication and high standards of the lawyers at John Stevenson & Associates.

In addition to the achievements above, Cort maintains membership in the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, the Houston Bar Association, the Houston Young Lawyers Association, and the American Bar Association. Cort is licensed to practice in all Texas state courts and in the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas. He and his wife, Amy, have co-chaired a Houston Young Lawyers Association committee dedicated to providing family-friendly events for the legal profession.

Cort’s dedication to serve others extends beyond his legal accomplishments. Every year since he started his litigation practice, Cort has been involved with planning, organizing, and executing the Novemberfest Metric Century, a bike ride benefiting The Center Serving Persons with Mental Retardation. He was a member of Charity Players, a group of young Houston professionals dedicated to raising money for various charitable interests, and served as that group’s president from 2001-2002. Cort is an avid sports fan, but his favorite activity is spending time with his wife and their twin sons Charlie and Joseph.
