Born in Oklahoma, Cort attended Baylor University to obtain both his undergraduate and graduate degrees.  After receiving a B.A. in History and Political Science in 1993, Cort went on to graduate cum laude from Baylor Law School in 1998, where he was a member of the Law Review and named Outstanding Student of the Law School.  From there, Cort had the honor of serving as a briefing attorney for the Honorable Harriet O'Neill and the Honorable Kent Thompson Frost on the Fourteenth Court of Appeals in Houston.  This year of appellate experience provided Cort with a significant advantage in trial analysis and strategy as he began his trial practice.

In 1999, Cort accepted employment with Fulbright and Jaworski, L.L.P., where he handled a litany of civil litigation matters.  Cort's aptitude and skill was put to work on a docket that varied from mass tort and products liability litigation to energy and real estate litigation.  During his tenure at Fulbright, Cort  handled numerous lawsuits, including those involving claims of catastrophic personal injuries, defective products and medical devices, injuries caused by hazardous pharmaceuticals and dangerous premises, toxic torts, accidents and injuries at oil and gas facilities and other industrial sites, property loss, conversion, breach of contract, and other commercial disputes.

In 2006, Cort joined the predecessor firm to Stevenson & Murray, seeking to use his vast experience to advance plaintiffs' rights and improve the lives of those injured negligently or intentionally by others. The commitment, ethics, and accomplishments that Cort brought with him match the dedication and high standards of the lawyers at Stevenson & Murray.

Cort's exceptional talent has been recognized not only by those with whom and against whom he has practiced, but also by Texas Monthly Magazine.  Beginning in 2004 and continuing through 2009, the magazine has recognized Cort each year as a Texas Rising Star, an honor awarded to the top 2.5% of Texas lawyers under age forty.

In addition to the achievements above, Cort maintains membership in the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, the Houston Young Lawyers Association, the Houston Bar Association, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, and the Houston Trial Lawyers Association.  Cort is licensed to practice in all Texas state courts and in the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas.  He and his wife, Amy, have co-chaired a Houston Young Lawyers Association committee dedicated to providing family-friendly events for the legal profession.

Cort's dedication to serve others extends beyond his legal accomplishments.  Every year since he started his litigation practice, Cort has been involved with planning, organizing, and executing the Novemberfest Metric Century, a bike ride benefitting The Center Serving Persons with Mental Retardation.  He was a member of the Charity Players, a group of young Houston professionals dedicated to raising money for various charitable interests, and served as that group's president from 2001-2002.  Cort is an avid sports fan, but his favorite activity is spending time with his wife and their four children, twins Charlie and Joseph and twins Will and Helen.
